It’s been quite the week for Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts in the headlines. First, it was revealed that his lack of participation this week at Falcons Organized Team Activities (OTAs) was, reportedly, tied to a foot injury. A lower body injury while entering into a contract year is never a fun mix of variables. But now, Pitts’ bid to recapture the magic of his rookie season has another developing subplot. He’s reportedly being eyed as a trade target by several teams — and could actually available for trade at the right price.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz has reported this afternoon that the Falcons are reportedly keen on keeping Pitts, who is due to make $10.8 million this year in the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. But, per Schultz, “it would take at least a Day 2 pick to even spark serious talks.”

The Falcons’ remainder of the tight end room is limited, to say the least. Veterans Charlie Woerner & Teagan Quitoriano, former college quarterback Feleipe Franks and 2025 undrafted free agent Joshua Simon are the notable other names behind Pitts.

With that in mind, and a limited free agent pool available, it’s understandable that the Falcons would want a serious asset coming back to justify a pivot off of their former top-five draft choice in a contract year.

It could be good business to make a trade if the Falcons get that kind of offer, though. Pitts has been fine the last two seasons, but not the magical weapon he proved capable of as a rookie in 2021. That feels like eons ago now. The aforementioned scarce pool of tight ends in free agency apparently has the trade market at the position buzzing this summer, too.

It was reported just yesterday that the Miami Dolphins had shared some called with the Pittsburgh Steelers exploring the possibility of a trade for 2024 Pro Bowler Jonnu Smith.

If the Steelers, or any other team, is truly intent on securing an upgrade at the position this summer, they may be willing to meet the Falcons’ asking price to start a serious negotiation. And, given the cost of tight end salaries these days along with some of Pitts’ frustrations, it may be worth considering doing a deal before it’s time to pay up on a new contract into the future or let him walk after the season.
