Michael Penix Jr. is the ultimate X-Factor for the Falcons by being the best in the NFL at a stat that is crucial to QB success
No QB is better than Michael Penix Jr. when it comes to this key stat
Atlanta Falcons second-year QB Michael Penix Jr. is entering his first season as a full-time starter in the NFL. His teammates and coaches believe the young QB is in store for a special season, due to some of the ability he flashed as a rookie.
Despite playing in only five games and making three starts, he has already shown himself to be one of the best in the NFL at a key stat. If he can do it again while being the full-time starter, he could be one of the biggest X-Factors in the NFL.
Penix Jr. was the best QB in the NFL last season in the final four minutes of each half, according to Warren Sharp of Sharp Football. The formula he shared to calculate this is EPA divided by attempts from the 2024 regular season, and to qualify, you had to have at least 100 attempts. Penix Jr. just met that cut with him ending his rookie year with 105 attempts.
If you don’t want to listen to the quote shared by Sharp from an anonymous offensive coach on how crucial the final minutes of each half are for QB and team success, look at the top players after Penix Jr. Of the top 10, six were on playoff teams, and not a single one of the bottom 10 were from playoff teams. The Falcons finished just outside of the NFC playoff picture last season and are hoping to right that wrong this time around. This is now Penix Jr.’s team, and it’s time to see if he is able to show the rest of the NFL what the Falcons already believe: He is the real deal.
