The Baltimore Ravens let a huge portion of their defensive secondary walk via free agency this off-season. They return just two true safeties, and until Tuesday afternoon they were only three deep at cornerback in terms of players the Ravens would actually start. So it was great news to hear that Eric DeCosta decided to bring back one of last season's stars in the secondary with a great story.
According to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network the Ravens will be re-signing cornerback Arthur Maulet on a two-year deal. Maulet had his best career season last fall at age 30.
Arthur Maulet stepped up huge last fall for the Ravens as their primary slot cornerback in sub packages. Maulet set personal records for snaps (nearly 500), defensive turnovers forced (3), completion rate allowed, and NFL passer rating when targeted. He proved to be one of the better slot options in the league when the Ravens needed it most and should play that same role again in 2024.
Maulet has come a long way from his humble beginning as an undrafted free agent back in 2017 when he joined the Saints for training camp. He did manage to play in two games during his first two seasons in the NFL, but by the time he was entering year three he had already been waived or released five times by both the Saints and Colts.
Over the next four seasons Maulet clawed and scrapped his way to part-time dime package defensive roles on both the Jets and Steelers playing as the teams' fifth cornerbacks, but again was released by the Steelers before summer even began last summer.
But then the Ravens gave Maulet a chance in camp last July. His fifth NFL team in eight years. He wasn't even supposed to necessarily make the roster, but Maulet ended up operating as the Ravens fourth corner, playing almost 500 snaps and making big plays all season long.
Maulet had clearly earned a shot to come back for his age 31 season and Eric DeCosta rewarded him by bringing him back on a multi-year deal. Expect great things in the slot from him once again in 2024.
