The Washington Commanders parted ways with head coach Ron Rivera on Monday. Rivera finished with a 26-40-1 record during his four-season run with the Commanders.
Washington has already kicked off its search for its next head coach, as the NFC East side has requested permission to speak to multiple assistant coaches.
Among them, the Commanders have put in a request to interview Ravens assistant coach Anthony Weaver, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. On the other hand, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport noted that Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald has "received a request to interview" with Washington.
Weaver joined the Ravens in Jan. 2021 as both a defensive line coach and run game coordinator. He was not picked to be Baltimore’s new defensive coordinator following Don Martindale’s departure in Jan. 2022, but he was later named an assistant coach.
Weaver has helped to get the best out of multiple defensive linemen since joining the Ravens. For one, Justin Madubuike just capped off regular season play by leading the Ravens in sacks (13.0).
Macdonald returned to Baltimore in Jan. 2022 to serve as its defensive coordinator, which came on the heels of a one-season run as defensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines. Macdonald anchored the NFL’s No. 1 ranked defense this year, as the Ravens led the league in points per game allowed (16.5).
The Commanders will not be allowed to conduct in-person interviews with Weaver and Macdonald until after the divisional round of the playoffs.
