It took one full day of legal tampering, but the Baltimore Ravens have finally landed on some big news.
Baltimore is set to sign the top running back on the market Derrick Henry. The longtime member of the Tennessee Titans is staying in the AFC on a two-year deal for $16 million that can be worth up to $20 million. There will be $9 million guaranteed.
Day 1 of free agency was a wild one for the running back position since the group seemed to be over-saturated heading into free agency with teams not expected to spend big. Boy, was that wrong with multiple big names coming off the board quickly.
Josh Jacobs was the biggest reported deal with the Green Bay Packers with $48 million to be dispersed over four seasons, per multiple reports. Saquon Barkley struck one with the Philadelphia Eagles for three seasons and 37.5 million. D’Andre Swift was the first player reported to agree to terms after legal tampering began with a contract for $24 million over three years.
Other notable new landing spots for running backs
Tony Pollard – Tennessee Titans
Austin Ekeler – Washington Commanders
Gus Edwards – Los Angeles Chargers
Antonio Gibson – New England Patriots
Zack Moss – Cincinnati Bengals
Devin Singletary – New York Giants
Henry and the Ravens were rumored to be a match for some time now and as running backs flew off the board, the more likely it began to look. Baltimore could have settled for any of the running backs on the list above, but they waited it out for perhaps the biggest name of them all (in his prime at least). Forming a backfield with Lamar Jackson at quarterback and Henry to his left or right is a scary offense for the rest of the AFC and the NFL as a whole.
Over the course of eight seasons in the NFL, Henry has over 9,500 rushing yards and has crossed the goal line 90 times. His best season came in 2020 when he led the league in rushing with 2,027 yards and 17 touchdowns.
It’s been since Ray Rice and Jamal Lewis that the Ravens had an elite running back talent like Henry and he may clear both in his prime. Defending the Ravens’ offense just became a lot tougher with their latest big spending.
