The Baltimore Ravens will be without J.K. Dobbins for the remainder of the 2023 season. Dobbins suffered a torn Achilles injury during the third quarter of the Ravens’ Week 1 home win over the Houston Texans. The Ravens have already placed the fourth-year running back on the injured reserve list, and he is reportedly set to undergo surgery on Friday.
Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said during a press conference on Monday that the team currently does not plan to bring in a running back outside of the organization to replace Dobbins. Former All-Pro running back Maurice Jones-Drew does not believe that this is the right move for Baltimore. For a team with "championship aspirations," he wants to see Baltimore go all out and trade for Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor.
"That’s all fine and dandy, but I’m not really buying it," Jones-Drew wrote in an NFL.com column. "The Ravens have championship aspirations in 2023, and while they routinely boast one of the best rushing attacks league-wide no matter who shares the backfield with Lamar Jackson, I still feel like they need another dynamic player on offense.
"Imagine this rushing attack with Jackson and Taylor. Baltimore would dominate defenses on the ground, and that threat would help open up new OC Todd Monken’s passing game. Come on, Baltimore — do it!"
Taylor, who is currently on the PUP list, requested a trade from the Colts in July. He was given permission to seek a trade partner, but the one-time Pro Bowler is still a member of the Colts organization.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport did recently speculate that the Ravens could be a viable fit for Taylor, although it is not known whether the team would consider pulling off such a blockbuster move.
For now, the Ravens will count on Gus Edwards and Justice Hill to lead their ground game the rest of the way.
