Former Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins, who played with the franchise for two years from 2016-17, passed away Monday at the age of 28.
The Ravens released a statement upon announcing Collins' death:
"With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Alex Collins. Always quick to greet everyone with a smile, he was a genuinely kind person who carried a special joy and passion wherever he went. May Alex always be remembered for the light and love he brought to so many people in his life."
Collins, a fifth-round pick from the 2016 NFL Draft, was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks following a highly-productive college career at Arkansas. He was waived by the Seahawks right before the 2017 season when the Ravens claimed him.
In two years in Baltimore, Collins ran for 1,384 yards and 13 touchdowns in 25 games played, 22 of them being starts. He was the Ravens' leading rusher during that first season in 2017, and his 973 yards on 212 carries ended up being career highs for him.
"Alex was a joy to be around and someone whose light shined brightly," head coach John Harbaugh said of Collins. "I'll always remember him for being a great teammate who had an uplifting spirit that impacted everyone he encountered. He was also a smart player who ran with unlimited determination, and he contributed to a lot of our success during his time in Baltimore. We send our heartfelt condolences and support to Alex's family. May he now rest in God's eternal peace."
Collins was waived by Baltimore following the 2018 season and was out of the NFL for nearly two years before rejoining the Seahawks during the 2020 season. He ended up starting six games for his original team in 2021, the last time he played in the league.
Collins' football career was capped off with a season in the USFL. He carried the ball 33 times for 98 yards and rushed for one touchdown for the Memphis Showboats in 2023.
Ravens: Odell Beckham Jr. epitomized leadership with what he said recently
That’s an understatement.
