The Baltimore Ravens put on a defensive clinic in their road win against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

The Roquan Smith-led Ravens defense had its sights set on slowing down the Justin Herbert-led Chargers offense, and the unit did just that. Herbert threw for a mere 217 passing yards in the contest, and running back Austin Ekeler logged a lowly 3.2 yards per rush attempt average.

What ultimately decided this Week 12 matchup was the turnover battle. The Chargers turned the ball over four times on the day, with three of them coming on fumbles lost.

Multiple Ravens defensive players had game-changing plays against the Chargers, which is just what stands out the most to head coach John Harbaugh about his team’s defense.

"Every single guy comes up and makes a play," Harbaugh said after the game. "Every single play, somebody has to put a period on the play. Somebody on defense has got to make a stop, make a tackle. You have to bat a ball down.

"You have to do something to make the play or it’s going to run into the end zone, and the sooner the better, obviously, on any given play. … Guys were on point, locked in, doing their job, playing as hard as they could, fundamentally sound, tackling people."

Overall, six different Ravens players have recorded at least 3.0 sacks this season, and 10 different talents on the team have forced at least one fumble.

It has come as no surprise to Harbaugh that Baltimore’s defense has simply blossomed this year.

"These guys will tell you, I’ve been saying it since last summer, that we had a chance to be this kind of unit, and we’ve got five more regular season games and whatever comes after that to really determine what the final chapters are going to be in the story of our defense," Harbaugh said.

The Ravens currently rank second in both points per game allowed (15.6) and total yards per game allowed (273.9) this season.
