The Todd Monken era with the Baltimore Ravens will finally get underway on Sunday. The Ravens are set to host the Houston Texans in Week 1, and Monken will make his debut as offensive coordinator for the AFC North powerhouse in the contest.
Opposing teams saw a sneak peek of Monken’s offense during the preseason, although the Ravens’ first-team offense did not share the field for a single snap. Among them, the Ravens ruled out quarterback Lamar Jackson from each of their three preseason contests, but the former NFL MVP award winner has spent much time over the past months learning the ins and outs of Monken’s playbook.
For Jackson, there is much that he is already fond of with Monken’s offensive system.
"I feel great actually — just the explosiveness, getting the ball out [of] my hands faster, getting guys open," Jackson said during a press conference on Wednesday. "[I] just can't wait to see it in a regular game now so we can actually talk about it more in depth."
It is always crucial for there to be a strong bond and a sense of trust between a quarterback and an offensive coordinator, which Jackson sees has already developed with Monken. The two-time Pro Bowler believes that this can all smoothly transition from the practice field to in-game action.
"He's been showing it during practice — just trusting me, being able to make plays at the line [of scrimmage] going against the ones [first-team] defense, stuff like that," Jackson said. "That's all I need. I know it's going to transition over to the game, so [we're] just going to see."
The Ravens will look to open up with a 1-0 record for the seventh time in the last eight seasons.
