The Baltimore Ravens stocked up on weapons for quarterback Lamar Jackson by signing wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Nelson Agholor plus drafting Zay Flowers in the first round.
Jackson already had someone on the roster that he could rely on, though, and that's tight end Mark Andrews who is coming off his third Pro Bowl campaign in four seasons.
When he came into the NFL in 2018, Andrews was mentored by former Ravens tight end Nick Boyle who played eight seasons with the team (2015-2022). This season, Andrews is now the Mr. Miyagi of the tight end room looking to lead a few Daniel LaRusso's down the right path.
"I’ve obviously learned so much from Nick [Boyle] and being that young guy and him being a third-year, I learned a lot from him; just being a leader," Andrews said. "You look up to guys that are older than you [and] have been through it, and so I’m just going to be there for those guys and try to give as much knowledge as I can, just be a good person and teammate and show them the ropes.”
Baltimore is transitioning from Greg Roman to new offensive coordinator Todd Monken who spent the last two seasons guiding the Georgia Bulldogs' offense to back-to-back national championships.
Of course, this means an entirely different scheme and philosophy for Baltimore going forward, and that comes with changes, and Andrews is anxious to start the journey.
“Well, it’s going to look different," said Andrews. "I’m excited for all the Baltimore fans, really everybody to see the difference of what this offense could be. I’ve got a lot of respect for Coach [Greg] Roman and what we’ve had and kind of the things that we have built here. I think there’s a lot to stand on with that. This is going to be a different offense…there’s going to be little nuances, here or there. We’re going to be able to throw the ball and do good things. I’m excited about the receivers; Coach [Todd] Monken is doing his thing. He’s really teaching well and making us all excited about learning and [the] install of his offense.”
Andrews shined with Roman, racking up nearly 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns in four years under his tutelage. The most impressive stretch was the last two seasons as Andrews has amassed 180 receptions for over 2,200 yards and 14 scores with Jackson missing a total of 10 games.
The challenge for Andrews now is to adapt to what Monken wants to do and embrace the changes, especially with the Ravens having more outside weapons than in years past.
“I think it’ll be different. It’s hard to pick out one little thing, but I think I’ll be able to do some different things, different routes, different combinations of routes that we can feed off of," Andrews said "I feel like I can run any route in the tree. I think I’m going to be able to do that and be utilized that way.”
Year 6 should be an interesting and productive one for Andrews.
