The Baltimore Ravens have had a total of eight defensive coordinators in franchise history, and four of them went on to become a head coach in the NFL. Mike Macdonald could become the next Ravens defensive coordinator to be hired as a head coach in the league.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer noted in a weekly notebook column that Macdonald "should start to get a little notoriety and maybe some heat" to become a head coaching candidate. Breer did add that Macdonald may face an uphill battle to land such a job due to both the "backlog of qualified candidates" who are defensive-based coaches and because "some owners [are] set on hiring offensive coaches instead."
According to Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith, Macdonald is not paying attention to this head coaching buzz.
"I know Mike personally is not concerned about it either with just his pedigree and the way he does things," Smith said during a press conference earlier this month. "He's focused on the Baltimore Ravens defense and what we can do to get better. That's his mindset each and every week."
Macdonald has anchored one of the NFL's most well-rounded defenses this season. Baltimore ranks second in both points per game allowed (15.6) and total yards per game allowed (273.9). The Ravens lead the NFL in a multitude of defensive stats, including sacks (47).
Baltimore’s defense will be put to the test quite a bit over the remainder of the season, especially as three out of its five remaining games will come against teams that currently rank in the top 12 in points per game.
