The Baltimore Ravens face quite a bit of uncertainty with their depth at the running back position.

Justice Hill and Keaton Mitchell are the lone running backs on Baltimore's roster who are under contract with the team for the 2024 season. The likes of Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins are set to hit free agency in March.

The Ravens have been linked with a few standout running backs who will be out of a contract next month, from Tennessee Titans’ Derrick Henry to Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Pollard. Even if Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta decides to sign such a player during free agency, he should still look to bring in a running back at this year’s NFL Draft to bolster his team's depth at the position.

DeCosta would be better off selecting an offensive guard, cornerback, and wide receiver over the opening three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft. From there, he should look to draft a running back such as former Kentucky standout Ray Davis in the fourth round.

Why the Ravens should target Ray Davis with their own fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft

Whether in free agency or the draft, the Ravens need to acquire a running back who has the prowess to be an X-factor in the passing game. Davis showed during his final season at Kentucky that he can blossom in such a role.

Davis tallied 1,452 yards from scrimmage and 21 total touchdowns with the Wildcats in the 2023 campaign. He added another dimension to the Devin Leary-led Kentucky offense in the air, tallying 33 receptions for 323 receiving yards.

Whether in the short passing game or in crucial red zone situations, Davis proved that he can be a go-to option as a pass-catcher.

Davis also made life difficult for a multitude of defensive linemen and linebackers over the course of the year. He posted a 3.81 yards after contact per attempt mark, which was up from the previous season (3.16).

Final Word

Davis would be a welcome addition to the Lamar Jackson-led Ravens offense.
