No one drafts in volume during the NFL Draft quite like the Baltimore Ravens. And in most seasons, there's very little in the way of negotiating that needs to be done with rookie contracts. The NFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) establishes a clear rookie wage scale that establishes the value of each pick ahead of time.
For the Ravens and second-round draft choice Mike Green, the process has strayed from the norm. Up until yesterday, the NFL was facing a log-jam of second-round rookie draft picks signing their deals amid disputes over how much of these contracts were to be fully guaranteed.
The San Francisco 49ers broke the floodgates open and the Ravens are now set to capitalize.
Reports indicate Baltimore is expected to sign Mike Green on rookie contract today
Getting Green signed and under contract will serve as a nice win for Baltimore as teams hurriedly try to finalize terms with second-rounders before next week's formal start to training camp. Green has the opportunity to serve as a critical piece of the pass rush puzzle for the Ravens in 2025, but getting him up and running without contractual distractions was a must to put him in the best position to seize a role.
Baltimore can sleep easier knowing that the uncertainty around a league-wide stalemate with second-round picks is crumbling inward on itself, which provided the framework for picks made after the 43rd overall pick Alfred Collins, who the 49ers inked yesterday to provide the breakthrough. Collins received a 10 percent jump in his guarantees from last year's 43rd overall choice.
From here on out, the focus can be football. There's plenty of other contractual negotiations that Eric DeCosta can undertake if he likes, but getting this one out of the way over the fine print of guarantees will make life easier for everyone involved.
