The Baltimore Ravens are looking to do in 2023 what they routinely do, and that's play excellent defense. But as they seek their fifth top-10 defense in size seasons, one member of the unit will be doing things a little differently.
Daryl Worley was signed to the Ravens practice squad in December 2021 and has been with the team ever since. However, that was as a cornerback.
As he enters his eighth NFL campaign, Worley is transitioning to the safety position.
“Actually, I’m looking at myself as a full-time safety," said Worley. "I haven’t taken any snaps this camp at corner at all, but they know and we know as a team if it comes down to it and they need me to move back outside, it can be done. But, I’m happy where I’m at right now, and I’m loving the safety position.”
Worley has played for a total of six teams throughout his career and has logged 280 tackles, five interceptions, 39 pass breakups, and two sacks. Not mind-blowing numbers by any means, but decent.
Back in February, the Ravens brought Worley back on a one-year deal. In the midst of that, some talks between Worley and the organization were held about his role possibly being different in 2023, and it snowballed from there.
“Yes, it was a mutual decision," Worley said. "[They were] just conversations I had from the top to the bottom. [It was] just a conversation [and] just letting those guys know that I was willing to make the move if we needed it – body-wise – just knowing that the depth wasn’t there and knowing that intellectually I was able to make the switch and be able to make those calls and get the defense all on the same page.”
Worley's willingness to do whatever it takes no matter what position is the epitome of what being a team player is all about.
