The Baltimore Ravens made sure that defensive tackle Broderick Washington would be around for a while by signing him to a three-year extension on Wednesday.
It was an important move, considering most of the defensive linemen on the Ravens don't have long-term deals, plus he's such an asset as a run-stopper. However, he has the chance to make an impact differently in 2023.
"Without Calais, there are a lot of pass rush snaps up for grabs, and I'm trying to be one of the guys that's getting some of them," Washington said, via the team's website. "Chuck, every day, he's got something for the guys in the pass rush department, and he's been a great help for everybody – for the whole room, honestly. He makes us better as a unit, and we're going to continue to grow with him."
Washington will now have more on his plate as he will be responsible for making up what for Campbell's departure. However, being that he's a borderline Hall of Fame type player, that will be a tall task for Washington to accomplish.
The former fifth-round pick got taken under Campbell's wing, which certainly created a bond between the two. The lessons that Washington learned from Campbell are what he's going to take with him as he looks to be more of a leader.
"It's kind of hard to fill those shoes so I kind of don't even try," Washington said. "I was sick when he left us. It kind of hurt my feelings. I understand it's a business. But the values and standard that he set here, I try to keep that every day. He showed me the way."
Baltimore has had four defenses ranked in the top 10 over the last five seasons. Washington has millions of reasons to motivate him to keep that standard going with his new deal, plus what Campbell instilled in him.
Ravens veteran still feels he has something to prove
The chip on his shoulder is real.
