Something new always seems to happen in the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers opened up the scoring in their home matchup against the Baltimore Ravens in quite an unexpected way. The 49ers were awarded a safety during the first quarter of the contest, and they sure can thank referee Alex Moore for having a helping hand in the play.
Moore was backpedaling in the end zone as Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was attempting to evade pressure from a trio of 49ers defenders on a crucial first down play. Moore lost his footing and ended up accidentally tripping the sixth-year passer.
NFL crew chief Bill Vinovich did not give Jackson a pass, as he went on to issue him an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone. While Jackson was both not sacked and outside the pocket on the play, his pass attempt did not reach the line of scrimmage.
Fortunately for the Ravens, the Brock Purdy-led 49ers offense did not take full advantage of the safety, as the unit wound up settling for a field goal on the following drive.
Jackson and Ravens head coach John Harbaugh sure will have plenty to say about the safety after the game.
