The Baltimore Ravens placed running back J.K. Dobbins on the PUP list nearly two weeks ago as he rehabs from his knee injury. However, he isn't in attendance for training camp.
That's a good reason for that, and that's his current contract situation.
Dobbins has expressed frustration with the 1.39 million he's owed in 2023. So, It's safe to say that's the real reason he's been absent from camp and not his injury.
Ravens' head coach John Harbaugh took questions after Wednesday's practice. He expressed that he talked with Dobbins recently, but there's still uncertainty at the moment on when he'll show up.
“There comes a point in time when it does become a concern," Harbaugh said. "He wants to be out there and he needs to be out there. I don’t know when he’s going to come back. But I know I’m going to be really happy when he does.”
This is a classic tale of two sides having a strong point.
Dobbins has averaged nearly six yards per rush for his career and he's also accounted for 64 first downs. In his case, the hesitation by the Ravens to pay him at the moment isn't performance-based.
The problem when it comes to Dobbins is that his current injury situation isn't his first trip down that road. In addition to missing nine games in 2022, Dobbins was out for the entire 2021 season when he tore his ACL.
It's completely understandable where Dobbins is coming from to a degree. But the Ravens have to factor in the injury history of Dobbins when it comes to a long-term commitment.
Dobbins is missing precious time with his teammates from a repetition and chemistry-building standpoint. However, the NFL is a business at the end of the day, and the Ravens, plus Dobbins, surely would like to resolve this soon.
Ravens veteran doesn’t want to be just another name on the roster
He wants to make an impact.
