It is currently up in the air as to just which cornerback will Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald call on to cover Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen in Week 12.
At the moment, all signs point to Ravens cornerback Brandon Stephens being called on to square off with Allen. Marlon Humphrey is still nursing a calf injury, and Stephens is coming off of a keen performance in Baltimore’s home game against the Cincinnati Bengals in which he helped hold wideout Ja’Marr Chase to a mere two receptions.
If Stephens ends up getting the nod to shadow Allen, then he will be well-ready for the challenge of having to contain the veteran wideout.
"He’s a big part of their offense," Stephens said during a press conference on Wednesday. "The offense runs through him, but he’s a skilled player. A finesse to his game, but I’m excited for the matchup."
Baltimore’s defense has its sights set on having the last laugh against Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert — a passer who Stephens rates highly.
"A special quarterback, and we know that," Stephens said. "He’s a smart guy [who is] able to read coverages, can fit balls in tight coverage. It's on us to make it as hard as possible on him with our covers, with the gameplan.
"It will definitely be a good matchup, going against him and their receivers, so we’re looking forward to that."
Herbert has faced the Ravens just once in his career. He posted a 67.8 passer rating in the Chargers’ 34-6 defeat to Baltimore in the 2021 season.
