The Baltimore Ravens’ Week 8 road win over the Arizona Cardinals was a game of two halves.
The Ravens did not strive to regularly run the football during the first half of the contest. Ravens running backs Gus Edwards and Justice Hill combined for a mere seven rush attempts in the opening 30 minutes of the game.
The script flipped for Baltimore’s rush offense in the second half. Edwards and Hill were often called on to run the football in crucial downs, and they each helped to make Baltimore’s offense unpredictable for Arizona’s front seven.
While the Ravens went on to once again enjoy much success on the ground, Lamar Jackson wanted to see the team establish the run early in the game.
"I believe we got away from the run," Jackson said during his postgame press conference. "We were passing the ball a lot earlier in the game, and I believe we should have been running a little bit [to] just balance out our offense out because last week when we were balancing our offense, we showed strides of being great all across the board."
As with Jackson, Edwards had hoped to see Baltimore run the ball more during the opening half.
“I feel like it was just like everybody knew that we had to get back to the running game before the game even started,” Edwards said after the game. “Just watching them [the Cardinals] on film, we definitely saw some stuff from them that we felt we could run the ball. I’m glad we were able to get back to that before it was too late.”
Overall, Baltimore tallied 130 rushing yards on a 4.5 yards per rush attempt average against Arizona. The current AFC North leaders have logged at least 100 rushing yards in each of their games played so far this year.
The Ravens will square off with a Seattle Seahawks team in Week 9 that has allowed a 96.9 rushing yards per game average this season.
