The Baltimore Ravens took a chance on running back Gus Edwards when they signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2018. His first three seasons were productive as he ran for over 700 yards in each.
In 2021, Edwards missed the entire season with a torn ACL after signing a two-year extension worth $10 million, and a knee injury forced him to miss eight more last season. So, it’s been a struggle for him as of late.
Edwards hasn't let the misfortune he's had the last couple of years get him down too much. Instead, he's geared toward making the 2023 campaign one to remember.
"I have a lot of experience under my belt, and saying Year 6, it seems like, 'Wow, this time's flashing,'" Edwards said, via the team's website. "But I'm ready to have my best year. I'm ready to put it all together. I feel like I'm in a great position to do that, and I have a chip on my shoulder. I just want to prove a lot of people wrong."
Edwards has a new offensive coordinator in Todd Monken who came over from the two-time defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs. So, of course, that comes with some change when it comes to philosophy and terminology and things of that nature.
This also means that roles on the Ravens' offense could be adjusted in some manner. Regardless, Edwards just wants to contribute in a big way.
"I'm ready to do whatever this offense allows me to do," said Edwards. "[I'm] ready to make plays in different ways, and I feel like that's something I've always been able to do. This offense is going to put me in that space to make those plays and get open in checkdowns and stuff."
Edwards will compete with J.K. Dobbins and Pro Bowler Melvin Gordon for snaps. That's no small task, but he's ready.
