The Baltimore Ravens have a reputation for being great defensively. However, they run the football well also, finishing No.1 in the NFL last season.
Having quarterback Lamar Jackson back healthy will certainly boost the Ravens rushing efforts in 2023 with his fantastic skills on the ground, but they added veteran Melvin Gordon as well. Currently, running back J.K. Dobbins, who is having some contract issues, isn't at training camp at the moment, giving Gordon some much needed extra reps.
This could work in Gordon's favor when it comes to making the Ravens' final 53-man roster. Nonetheless, Gordon is eager to capitalize on any chance he gets.
"Being the new guy, you have to take each and every opportunity for what it's worth and make the best of it," Gordon said, via the team's website. "When I get the ball in my hands and I get to do my thing, I've got to show them why I'm still valuable."
Gordon was a Pro Bowler in 2016 and 2018 with the Los Angeles Chargers and had his only 1,000-yard season in between. After two 900-yard campaigns to start his time with the Denver Broncos, Gordon struggled last season as he was waived in November after his fifth fumble of the season.
Last November, Gordon was signed to the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. He would end up winning a Super Bowl ring despite not taking a single snap for them and finished with just 318 rushing yards and two touchdowns for the year.
Gordon signed with the Ravens less than two weeks ago. Despite his tough 2022 season and his age, Gordon isn't ready to ride off into the sunset yet.
"I'm honestly blessed. Nothing to complain about with anything when it comes to this," Gordon said on Saturday practice.
"I'm happy that I get to put on a jersey and represent an organization. I'm excited because I could be at home wondering what I'm going to do next. I have some things lined up, but I'm not ready to give my dream up right now."
Gordon is part of a talented running back room for the Ravens with Dobbins, Gus Edwards, and undrafted rookie Keaton Mitchell. This makes his journey to a roster spot a tough one, but only time will tell if he can handle it or not.
