No team can have too many pass rushers. The Baltimore Ravens understand that and brought in former first-round pick, Jadeveon Clowney, for a visit last week.
Clowney took other visits as well, but Baltimore and what they had to offer was too much to deny as Baltimore inked him to a deal on Friday.
Baltimore hosted Kyle Van Noy last month, had an interest in Dawuane Smoot, and even considered a reunion with Justin Houston, who had 9.5 sacks for them in 2022 before getting things down with Clowney.
This is a reunion of sorts for Clowney. He finds himself once again in the same building with Ravens assistant head coach Anthony Weaver, who was with the Houston Texans, the team that drafted Clowney, from 2015 to 2020.
The Ravens bringing in Clowney makes sense for depth and experience purposes. Baltimore will rely heavily on Odafe Oweh and David Ojabo this season. However, the former is going into his third year, and the latter only played in two games as a rookie last season.
Then there's Tavius Robinson, who is just a rookie. So, Clowney has more experience in his career than all three of these young guys combined, which makes him a perfect mentor for them while also contributing to the team with his play.
Baltimore also gets help in one key stat with the Clowney signing.
Over the past four seasons, the Ravens have had three top-10 defenses. But after finishing as the best defense when it comes to getting pressure on the quarterback in 2019 (34.3% of dropbacks), Baltimore has ranked 15th, 25th, and 23rd in that area over the last three years.
Clowney has produced 82 pressures and 56 hurries over the last two seasons. So, he's a very solid option to have as a rotational guy. Also, after having a down year with just two sacks in 2022, Clowney is undoubtedly motivated to have a bounce-back year.
