There was a bit of concern on Friday when Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman John Simpson missed practice. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh did downplay such concerns during a press conference after practice, noting that Simpson "had a personal, family thing — a positive thing."
Harbaugh revealed on Monday that the reason Simpson did not take part in Baltimore’s practice session on Friday was because the left guard and his family welcomed a baby boy.
"John Simpson had a great game and a great weekend," Harbaugh said. “I don't know if he made the announcement yet, but he had a real positive family thing. … He had a baby — his wife had a baby — their first, their son.
"[He was] seven pounds, nine ounces. It was just really wonderful. His son got a game ball on the plane after the game."
Simpson went above and beyond to rejoin the team in time for its divisional matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero noted on Monday that because Simpson missed the team plane to be with his wife for the birth of their first child, he had to catch a Southwest Airlines flight on Saturday night. He also received a game ball for his son.
Simpson not only went on to play in every snap on offense of the Ravens’ Week 2 win over the Bengals, but he was also quite instrumental as both a pass-blocker and a run-blocker. Overall, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was not sacked once in the contest, and the offense posted a 4.8 yards per rush attempt average.
Simpson continues to prove to be a valuable member of Baltimore’s offensive line.
