Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta will have multiple crucial decisions to make in the offseason. For one, DeCosta will have to decide on whether to go all out to re-sign defensive tackle Justin Madubuike.
The Ravens reportedly are hoping to see Madubuike stay put past the 2023 season. Madubuike, who holds a cap hit of $3.015 million this year, is set to become a free agent after the ongoing campaign.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Baltimore "wants to try to keep" Madubuike. Russini added that the fourth-year defensive lineman is on the doorstep of “getting a big payday.”
Madubuike could very well be in line for a big-money contract. Spotrac projects an average annual salary of $18.4 million for the versatile defensive talent.
Madubuike is enjoying a breakout season in his fourth year with the Ravens. He has already posted career highs in multiple stats, from quarterback hits (21) to tackles for loss (10). He has also tallied a career-high 10.0 sacks, which leads all Ravens players this year.
Madubuike’s career season has not come as a surprise to Ravens head coach John Harbaugh.
"Nothing really has surprised me, because I knew he was going to have a great season," Harbaugh said ahead of Week 12. "You could see it in the spring [and in] the summer. You kind of saw it over the last couple of years.
"The talent has really been there, and, again, it's really a developmental thing."
Madubuike is currently playing in the final year of his rookie contract.
