Roquan Smith made headlines ahead of the Baltimore Ravens' road matchup against the Cleveland Browns. Even as he is still fairly new to the Ravens and Browns rivalry, he fueled anticipation for the Week 4 encounter between the two teams during a press conference on Wednesday.
"I definitely think about that, but at the end of the day, you're considered the bad guy because you're going into essentially another man's house, and you're trying to take over," Smith said when asked whether he embraces the villain role when playing on the road.
"His wife, kids, [and] everyone is there to watch them. So, we're going over there to beat their tails in front of their wife and kids."
Multiple Browns players took note of Smith’s pregame comments, including linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who said that they were "post board material, I guess. Locker room material."
Smith ended up backing his words on Sunday. He tallied 10 total tackles against the Browns and helped hold the Dorian Thompson-Robinson-led offense to a mere one scoring drive.
During his postgame press conference on Sunday, Smith was asked about his comments from last Wednesday, and he shied away from downplaying them.
"I don't really care how people take things out of context," Smith said. "I know what I meant, and the people who are close to me know exactly what I meant by those comments. It was just the way I felt about going to war with my brothers.
"Honestly, if you need bulletin board material in this game to go play the game a different way, you're playing the game for the wrong reasons."
Smith and company held the Browns to 166 total yards and a 2.6 yards per play average in Week 4.
The Ravens now sit atop the AFC North standings with a 3-1 record.
