Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has been named the winner of the 2023 AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Schwartz surpassed expectations in his first season as Browns defensive coordinator. The Browns led the NFL in total yards allowed per game (270.2) and ranked second behind the Baltimore Ravens in passer rating allowed (74.6).

Schwartz garnered the most vote points (160) for this year’s NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award. Now-former Ravens defensive coordinator and Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald finished right behind Schwartz with 94 vote points.

The Ravens blossomed in what turned out to be Macdonald’s final season as the team’s defensive coordinator. Baltimore led the NFL in a multitude of stats in the regular season, from points per game allowed (16.5) to total sacks (60).

Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken tallied the fifth-most vote points (46) for the NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honor. The Ravens ranked fourth in points per game (28.4) this season.

Monken will return next season for what will be his second campaign as Ravens offensive coordinator. On the other side of the football, Zach Orr takes over for Macdonald as Baltimore’s new defensive play-caller.
