Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins’ 2023 campaign has come to a sudden close. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh confirmed in his post-game press conference that Dobbins suffered a torn Achilles injury during the third quarter of Baltimore’s Week 1 win over the Houston Texans.
Dobbins limped off the field after hauling in a 5-yard reception on the Ravens’ opening drive of the second half. The Ravens initially listed the fourth-year running back as questionable to return against the Texans due to an ankle injury, but he was later downgraded to out.
This is the second season-ending injury of Dobbins’ run with the Ravens. He was sidelined for the entirety of the 2021 campaign after suffering a torn ACL injury during Baltimore’s preseason game against the then-Washington Football Team in Aug. 2021. He also missed time last season due to a nagging knee ailment.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson knows first-hand just what Dobbins has had to go through over the past two years. For Jackson, it is "very unfortunate" to see Dobbins once again suffer a devastating injury.
"I feel like J.K.'s been busting his behind to get back on that field and show the world what he's capable of, to help us out along the way," Jackson said during his post-game press conference. "I spoke highly of him in the offseason to let everyone know that we’re gonna need him.
"For him to go down with a season-ending injury, it's very unfortunate for not just him but all of us. That’s our brother."
The Ravens are now set to count on Gus Edwards and Justice Hill to lead their ground game for the rest of the season. The two running backs combined for 54 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns against the Texans.
