A Chicago Bears rookie was recently named as a sleeper who could shine in 2023.
The Bears made numerous improvements to their roster this offseason via free agency, trades, and the NFL draft.
One of Chicago's biggest improvements was adding wide receiver DJ Moore to the roster (acquired via trade with the Carolina Panthers for the No. 1 overall pick).
While the Bears made plenty of improvements to their roster, they also lost a key player in running back David Montgomery.
Montgomery, a third-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, signed a three-year deal with the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason. The former Iowa State standout will make his return to Chicago on December 10 when the Lions visit Soldier Field.
The Bears are expected to roll with D'Onta Foreman and Khalil Herbert as their top two running back options in 2023.
CBS Sports, however, thinks that rookie running back Roschon Johnson, a fourth-round pick earlier this spring, could be a player that shines for Chicago in 2023.
From CBS Sports: Johnson doesn't have Earl Campbell power. Maybe not even Ricky Williams-type force through contact. He's in the vicinity of those living legends of Texas running backs in terms of painless trucking talent. At 6-foot and 220 pounds, Johnson glides through collisions like they aren't even happening on his frame, and as his 1.52 10-yard split — 82nd percentile — indicates, he's quite explosive for his size. He enters a backfield with another Mack truck from the University of Texas — D'Onta Foreman. Bring the ice packs when facing the Bears in 2023. Johnson and Foreman will not make tackling fun for linebackers and defensive backs.
Johnson's skillset — explosive and bruising — perfectly fits the culture that Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has created in Chicago.
It'll be interesting to see how the Bears operate without Montgomery in the picture. They have several great options in Foreman, Herbert, and Johnson. And Johnson should have plenty of opportunities this summer to earn a significant role in Chicago's offense.
