The Bengals are already back to their old ways after suggesting things would be different in 2023

Earlier this week, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase suggested that he and his teammates wouldn't be talking trash via the media this season.

Chase told Kay Adams, the host of "Up and Adams", that there isn't a reason to keep talking trash via the media. Instead, Chase insinuated that Cincinnati will be keeping the trash talk inside the locker room this season.

"Oh we're going to talk, we're just not going to keep doing it in the media — there's not a reason for that," explained Chase.

Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins appeared to be on board with Chase's approach as he declined to talk trash about the Green Bay Packers earlier this week.

If you're a Bengals fan who is disappointed with this approach — like Joe Burrow said during the playoffs last season, the trash talk is part of what makes the sport fun — then you're in luck.

The Bengals were back to their old ways on Wednesday after a fight broke out during a joint practice with the Packers.

Cincinnati defensive lineman DJ Reader got into a bit of a scuffle with Green Bay offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins.

After practice, Reader called Jenkins a J.A.G. — just a guy.

"Man, I don't even know that guy," said Reader. "I don't know who he is. No idea. He a J.A.G. in my book. Just a guy. I don't know that man."

Reader added that he felt like Jenkins became frustrated during practice because he was "losing".

I think most Bengals fans knew that the trash talk would eventually make its return — though everyone probably thought it would happen during the regular season, not before the first preseason game.

Either way, it's clear the Bengals still have that same chip on their shoulder that they did last season. But they need to be careful with giving other teams bulletin board material.

They went a little too far with the trash talk before playing the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game last season. And according to new Bengals offensive lineman Orlando Brown Jr, who played for the Chiefs last season, the trash talk from Cincinnati before the AFC Championship game gave Kansas City some extra juice.

Cincinnati might want to be a little more selective with their trash talk this fall. The last thing they want to do is give another team an advantage. It's hard enough to win in the NFL without giving other teams extra motivation.
