The former New England Patriots offensive coordinator has officially taken the head coaching job at Boston College, New England Football Journal's Kevin Stone reports.
And the school made it official soon after.
There has been numerous reports and a lot of speculation this week regarding O'Brien's future. And it seems things were trending in the direction of him joining Boston College.
The news was first reported a week ago by Stone after it was reported that O'Brien was headed there for an interview. The school conducted around six to nine interviews and it was ultimately between O'Brien, Al Washington and Troy Calhoun.
But he was the top candidate the whole time, and things were down to specifics.
With the Patriots parting ways with Bill Belichick, everyone's job in the organization was not certain. And O'Brien clearly didn't want to take any chances, planning for his future instead.
O'Brien was already set to return to his college roots for the 2024 season, taking the open offensive coordinator job at Ohio State. But he couldn't pass up on the opportunity to be a head coach.
And even more so, he gets to stay local.
Jeff Hafley has served as the head coach at Boston College for the last four years, but left to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers.
Let's see if O'Brien can live up the high expectations.
