The Buffalo Bills lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday for a number of reasons, but one of the main reasons for the loss was a huge discrepancy in penalties between the two teams.
Buffalo was flagged 11 times (resulting in 80 penalty yards), while the Eagles were called for just four penalties (30 penalty yards).
After the game, Bills safety Jordan Poyer, a Pro-Bowler last season, made it clear that he thinks officials have a big impact on the outcomes of games.
“A lot. A lot. A lot,” said Poyer when asked by The Athletic's Tim Graham on the officials' role in winning and losing. “It seems like it’s been like that all season. Nothing’s being done about it. Officials aren’t being held accountable for their calls or no-calls. Players are getting fined during the week for silly stuff.
“It doesn’t seem like, I don’t know…It’s not an excuse, but it’s just the way the game is being played this year," added Poyer in his conversation with Graham. "Doesn’t seem like a whole lot of accountability for the officials.”
Poyer isn't trying to use poor officiating as an excuse — and he shouldn't, the Bills had a golden chance to win the game in overtime after winning the coin toss — but he's understandably frustrated by the inconsistencies in officiating this season.
And he's right that there doesn't seem to be enough accountability for the officials. They're often making calls that determine whether a game is a win or a loss for team. If the players have to answer questions from the media after a poor play/decision that loses a game, why shouldn't officials face the same music?
