The absolute last thing the Buffalo Bills need is a quarterback, so why does Jalen Milroe matter to them? There's a potential scenario where he could absolutely matter.
The polarizing quarterback has accepted his invite to attend the 2025 NFL Draft, which matters. Typically, invites are only extended to players that the league believes have a good chance of getting drafted in the first round.
If Milroe is on the board as the draft is approaching the Bills at 30th overall, it could create a perfect situation for Brandon Beane to take advantage of.
Milroe isn't going to get selected by teams late in the first round. Those teams are set at quarterback. The last potential team where I could legitimately see him being an option is the Pittsburgh Steelers at pick 21. Maybe you could make an argument for the Rams at 26, But with Matthew Stafford under contract for the next two seasons, you have to think the Rams will be more interested in competing now.
If Milroe gets past the Steelers, then it will come down to the interest of other teams. Just like we saw with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018 when they traded up to take Lamar Jackson with the 32nd pick, the ability for teams to have a 5th year of team control on first round picks could interest a team to jump up to take a gamble on a high upside quarterback.
One team specifically comes to mind — The Giants, who hold the third overall pick, need a quarterback in a major way. If Cam Ward goes first overall to the Titans, which is looking increasingly likely, would the Giants have a grade high enough on any other quarterback to take at third overall? If the Browns pass on Shedeur Sanders at second overall, do the Giants take him with the third, or do they turn their attention to other talents like Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter?
If the Giants don't take a quarterback with the third pick, it's game on. It's entirely possible, just like last year, that there isn't a player available at 30th overall that Brandon Beane has valued much more highly than he would who's available just five picks later.
Would Beane be willing to add a 3rd or 4th round pick to move back a few picks? It feels like there's a great chance that he would. The Giants get their quarterback with a fifth-year option, and Beane adds more picks to the cabinet that he could use to move around the board. Win-win.
