Bills avoid potential nightmare scenario in win over the Browns plus other takeaways from Week 16 victory
A win is a win is a win.
The Buffalo Bills narrowly escaped Cleveland with a victory. It was an ugly second-half performance, which isn’t like the team as of late. Buffalo has historically dominated the second half this season, saving its best for last.
Buffalo avoided a major scare when quarterback Josh Allen went down with an injury right before the first half concluded. Fortunately, he was able to get back on the field, giving the Bills Mafia a big sigh of relief. Cleveland kept this game much closer than fans would’ve liked, having a chance to drive down the field and win the game late in the fourth quarter.
Here were our biggest takeaways from the team’s Week 16 victory.
James Cook, have a day (in the first half)
Buffalo Bills running back James Cook had a red-hot start to the contest, finding the end zone twice in the first half. In fact, he had nine carries for 100 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone.
The offense was humming, scoring touchdowns on three straight drives to open the game. Cook was jump-cutting his way into Cleveland territory throughout the first half, having fans thinking that Cook was going to walk away with perhaps another 200-yard performance.
Unfortunately, the offense sputtered in the second half, with Cook unable to get much going. Still, he deserves some Offensive Player of the Year honors for the work that he’s done in 2025. He’s now third all-time in terms of single-season rushing totals by a Bills running back, passing Thurman Thomas and sitting behind only O.J. Simpson.
Cook finished his day with 16 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
Josh Allen avoided injury, didn’t look like himself
Allen, as we mentioned, went down in the first half with an injury. He was scrambling to evade pressure and gave himself up around the one-yard line. He was able to finish the drive before trainers began working on him on the sidelines.
When he came out at halftime, throwing with his receivers, the entire city of Buffalo was much more relaxed. While Allen was back on the field, it didn’t amount to much in the second half.
The reigning MVP was pedestrian on the day, not putting on his Superman cape to lead the team to victory. Buffalo struggled mightily to get anything going after scoring on three straight possessions, punting more times than not, or having a loss of downs on some fourth-down attempts.
Defense struggled against a less-than-average offense
Perhaps the most frustrating part of the victory was the defense. Quarterback Shadeur Sanders had his way against Buffalo, using his arms and legs to do damage to Buffalo.
Put plainly, the Bills just couldn’t tackle or get off the field on third downs, something that’s plagued the roster all season. If Buffalo wants to make a deep postseason run, there’s a lot to clean up moving forward. It was frustrating for fans to see Sanders and the offense go down the field with ease throughout the matchup, keeping things interesting up until the final moments of the game.
At the end of the day, a win is a win, especially on the road in December. The Bills did enough early to survive their own mistakes late, but this wasn’t the type of performance that inspires confidence moving forward. Buffalo escapes Cleveland with the victory, but the film will be uncomfortable.
IF this team truly has Super Bowl aspirations, sharper execution, better tackling, and a full four quarters of focus will be required. The margin for error is only going to get thinner from here.
