General manager Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills front office have cut down the roster from 90 to 53 players, but that doesn’t mean their work is done. The next step is to assemble a practice squad. Some of the players that the team said goodbye to on roster cutdown day could return to the organization on the PS.

To be added to the PS, a player is immediately eligible if they have no accrued seasons, which means rookies or undrafted rookies immediately apply. Another way a player can land on the PS is if they were active on an NFL roster for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only accrued season. And last but not least, vested veterans. The NFL allows teams to carry up to six players per team, with no accrued season limitations.

However, Buffalo is the beneficiary of another wrinkle in the system. If the team has an eligible player for the International Pathway Program, it allows an additional PS spot. Instead of 16 PS players, the team gets 17. And, come on, who doesn’t love the number 17?

The IPP was designed to bridge the gap between athletes from other countries. It allows teams the option to keep that player and continue to work on their game without risking a roster spot. It’s an excellent addition from the league. You might remember that was the case when the team was allocated Christian Wade, who took his first NFL carry 65 yards for a touchdown.
