The Buffalo Bills preseason game was flat-out ugly. Outside of Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, and Dalton Kincaid, there were just a few reasons to celebrate this performance.
However, I wrote previously about Andy Isabella shining during camp, going as far as taking first-team reps last week. All eyes were undoubtedly going to be on the talented WR as he pushes for more playing time.
Sean McDermott and the coaching staff may have shown their hand with just how badly they too want him on the roster from an under-the-radar decision during the game.
Outside of the KR position, Buffalo decided to try Isabella's hands at the gunner position on special teams during the contest. Surprisingly, this is something Isabella hasn't done in his professional career.
For those who may not be familiar with the position, a gunner is a speedster who lines up close to the outside on a kicking or punting play and their primary goal is to get after the returner as quickly as possible for the tackle.
The coaching staff bringing him in and trying him out seemed to be an afterthought, that Isabella would be a long shot to make the roster. However, Isabella has completely destroyed that notion as he has a legitimate chance to crack the 53-man roster. McDermott loves special teams guys and if Isabella can find even a place in that unit, we like his chances.
This one move, while it may seem small, shows just how much the front office values him and sees in him on this team. Whether it's returning kicks, at the gunner position, or catching passes from any of the 3 quarterbacks, Isabella should also like his chances.
Everyone, especially the Bills Mafia, loves an underdog and Isabella has quickly become the latest camp darling that the fanbase has latched onto. For those hoping he's going to make the roster, this is an excellent step in the right direction.
Bills WR Andy Isabella making noise at camp
The Buffalo Bills may have, once again, found a diamond in the rough. Bills Mafia are already loving this guy after just one preseason game.
