Bills GM offers insight on DC position following Leslie Frazier's departure
No one expected the latest news surrounding the Buffalo Bills’ offseason.
The Buffalo Bills shockingly announced that defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier will take a year off from coaching in 2023 and aim for a return in 2024. The news is as surprising as it is concerning.
The Bills currently have no defensive coordinator in line for the upcoming season, leaving everyone to wonder who will run the show on that side of the ball.
On the same day of the Frazier update, Bills GM Brandon Beane took the podium at the NFL Scouting Combine and offered some insight.
"He didn't want to retire," Beane told reporters in Indianapolis. "He just wanted to take a step back."
"We're still working through that," said Beane when asked about who would take over the defensive coordinator role following Frazier's departure. "The good thing for us is, you guys know Sean's background. Sean has been a long-time defensive coordinator."
"Right now, (McDermott) he will lead that."
The Bills GM didn't commit to Frazier returning to the team in 2024 even if the coach does decide to go back into the NFL.
Beane also mentioned that if McDermott decided to take over play-calling himself, he wouldn't be opposed to it.
"I've seen him do it for a long time," said Beane citing his success. "If that's the route he feels is best for us, I'm going to support that."
Fortunately for the Bills, the team has several other defensive minds on the staff worthy of being considered. But clearly, Buffalo will consider the possibility of McDermott taking over completely at least for 2023.
This late in the coaching cycle, outside options are going to be considered a long shot.
