The NFL just handed Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott one of the league's bigger responsibilities: a seat at the Competition Committee table.
"First and foremost, it's a great honor to be thought of in this light," McDermott said through a statement regarding the announcement. "It comes with great responsibility to continue to grow this game that so many others have done for so many years."
What is the Competition Committee?
Per NFL Football Operations, the Competition Committee "reviews all competitive aspects of the game, including (but not limited to) playing rules, roster regulations, technology, game-day operations and player protection… The committee’s deliberative process takes into consideration the input of experts, clubs, players, league committees, the NFL Players Association and other sources".
Ultimately, the committee goes through a months-long process that ends with proposed rule changes. The 32 owners then vote on said proposals and if they pass, they are implemented in whatever fashion detailed in the proposal. 24 of the 32 owners must vote in favor of the rule in order for it to be implemented.
The Committee is headed up by Atlanta Falcons CEO Rich McKay. Cincinnati Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn, Miami Dolphins GM Chris Grier, Dallas Cowboys COO, executive vice president and director of player personnel Stephen Jones, New York Giants president, owner and CEO John Mara, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, and Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay are all members. The latter is also a new member, like McDermott.
