Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills started his speech off with a message for all of those who have stood by him after his traumatic injury. "First and foremost, I just want to say thank you. Thank God for being here."
Hamlin has been one of the best comeback stories in sports. Not only this season but in recent memory.
The Bills safety suffered a reported cardiac arrest in front of the entire world during a Monday Night Football contest against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Since then, it seems as though everyone has been keeping tabs on the talented safety. Hamlin has gone from battling for his life, taking a moment to facetime teammates, to even attending a Bills' home playoff game.
Needless to say, his story is inspiring.
Now, another chapter has been added to the Damar Hamlin saga. Fans of the NFL and Buffalo Bills won't soon forget what he's been able to accomplish.
Damar Hamlin has been awarded The Alan Page Community Award. This is the highest honor the NFL Players Association gives. Players across the NFL voted on a player that goes above and beyond to perform community service in his team city and/or hometown. With the award, Hamlin will be able to continue his legacy and build up more communities across his hometown or Western New York.
Hamlin took to the stage with a powerful message about life, community, and his impact on the world.
Being a member of the Buffalo Bills, Hamlin understands the importance of community, especially in Buffalo.
The city of Buffalo is known as the city of good neighbors, a place where the community is vital. Without mentioning Buffalo by name, Hamlin discussed the importance of giving back. "Giving back to my community has always been a big part of who I am
Damar then singled out his father from the crowd with a heartfelt message about his family and life. "Thankful to my father who is right here behind me. Growing up, watching him do community days in our community and I was just always waiting on my time when it came."
Hamlin continued, with his favorite quote and how he wants his impact to extend across borders. "One of my favorite quotes. It's a blessing to be a blessing. With that being said, I plan to never take this position for granted and always have an urgent approach to make a difference in the community. Where I come from and also communities across the world."
Hamlin's traumatic injury turned into something beautiful. Hopefully one day we can see the talented safety back on the field. If not, we're sure he's going to achieve great things for not only Buffalo but the world.
