Bills’ defensive coordinator offers high praise to Joey Bosa and reveals the one thing that makes him stand out on the roster
Joey Bosa looks ready to dominate.
The Buffalo Bills want to bring the Lombardi Trophy to Orchard Park, and they feel as though they have the team to do it. After spending valuable draft capital to bolster the defensive line, the team made a splash by signing veteran pass rusher Joey Bosa. Defensive coordinator Bobby Babich is beaming about Bosa and shared what he considers the most unique thing about the pass rusher since he arrived at One Bills Drive.
“Joey Bosa is an incredible dude, wants to assimilate into what we’re doing. If he makes a mistake, it weighs on him heavily: he doesn’t want to let his teammates down.” Babich continued. “So it’s been really cool. You guys have seen him rushing, you guys have been at practice, you have seen him at games. I think that’s the most unique thing that you don’t know about Joey Bosa.”
If you tuned into the latest episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks,” it wasn’t hard to tell that this team just feels different. Culture has always been important since Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane took over, and it remains one of the most important aspects of the organization. Bosa clearly understands the assignment and has embraced the city and his teammates.
“He’s been a welcome addition,” Babich said. “He’s quickly befriended a lot of the guys, and that’s as important as anything, that connection between those guys.”
Bosa signed a one-year deal with Buffalo
The five-time Pro Bowl defensive end signed a one-year, $12.6 million deal with a max value of $15.6 million based off incentives. In 2024, Bosa had five sacks, 22 tackles, and two forced fumbles. With a 13.9 percent pass rush win rate, he ranked 22nd among defensive linemen.
Staying healthy is the name of the game. You could feel Bosa’s presence early in the team’s first preseason game against the New York Giants, and it had the fan base more than a little excited for the regular season to begin. It’s not without concern, though, as throughout his nine-year career, Bosa has missed 42 games. However, when healthy, Bosa is a difference-maker, making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks and offensive coordinators alike.
Much like they did with Von Miller, the organization could keep Bosa on a snap count restriction to see if they can maintain his health. During the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Chargers, he stayed healthy and was sitting at 50 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. Miller was used in predominantly third-down situations to go get after the quarterback, and we could see a similar approach with Bosa this season.
With the regular season beginning on Sept. 7 in a tilt against the Baltimore Ravens, having Bosa healthy (knock on all the wood around you) will go a long way toward this team being successful.
