The Buffalo Bills have a very specific problem they must solve as soon as possible. The offense, despite being one of the most efficient ones in the NFL throughout the regular season, is flawed.
And when it comes down to it, it has to do with personnel more than it does coaching. Too much is put on Josh Allen's plate as he aims to overcome a shaky offensive line while lacking high-end receiving options beyond Stefon Diggs.
How they solve that ironic problem will be the story of the offseason for the Bills.
And now there's more urgency to the whole thing after the AFC East rival Miami Dolphins hired one of the best defensive coaches in football.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins are singing Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator on a three-year deal.
That should have a huge impact on the Bills. Suddenly, the team that's most likely to compete with them for the AFC East title in 2023 got one of the brightest minds in the game.
Although Fangio failed as head coach of the Denver Broncos, he's made a huge impact around the league with his style of defense. His two-high (safeties) defensive scheme became the perfect counterpunch to an NFL in which Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen terrorized the league with explosive passing.
Now Fangio will get to test his philosophy against Allen twice a year.
The Bills were already pressed to find a more sustainable way to attack defenses. This team can no longer ask Allen to play superhero every down by extending plays and making magic tricks on the football field.
Fangio's arrival at the division adds a sense of additional urgency to the situation. This is a great hire by the Bills' rivals.
