Bills' early roster cuts feature a big disappointment

Do you remember how good it felt to get your homework done ahead of time? Getting to kick back and relax without any worries in your mind? Maybe play some Madden or watch some football?
I like to think that's what the Buffalo Bills are feeling right about now. Given the pressure that comes with running an NFL team – especially one with Super Bowl aspirations – I'm probably wrong, however.
Be that as it may, the Bills have already released four players ahead of Tuesday's first league-wide cutdown day. The NFL requires teams to have no more than 85 players by Tuesday at 4 pm ET.
The Bills announced the cuts on Sunday and there are no major surprises there:
- OL Derek Kerstetter
- OL Jordan Simmons
- CB Olaijah Griffin
- TE Jalen Wydermyer
The two biggest surprises are the two last names on the list if you ask me. Griffin was a member of the Bills' practice squad in 2021 and while he had a tough path toward the 53-man roster, I didn't expect him to be cut this early.
Wydermyer's path to the NFL has been extremely odd.
He went from being looked at as a top tight end prospect to being perceived as a potential late-round draft steal. However, his stock constantly dropped as the NFL Draft got closer and closer.
When Buffalo took a flyer on him, fans were excited about the possibility of him being a steal. If some hadn't realized it after an uninspiring training camp, it's clear he wasn't it. His being let go this early is a big disappointment.
As for the offensive linemen, they were both at the bottom of the unofficial depth chart at their respective positions. They each had a surprising amount of playing time on Saturday, though. Simmons played in 55% of the offensive snaps and Kerstetter was in 41% of the snaps himself.
None of them showed anything good enough to be kept around.
The Bills now sit at 84 players on the roster, having one open spot that could soon be used in players returning from injury.
