Buffalo Bills fans are hoping that their first selection in the 2024 NFL Draft not only becomes a fan-favorite, but also becomes a part of the backbone of this organization for years to come. Bills GM Brandon Beane was asked about the development of wide receiver Keon Coleman today, and he provided plenty of thoughts on the rookie.
Brandon Beane gives update on development of Keon Coleman
After speaking about the leap and adjustments that second-year tight end Dalton Kincaid should be expecting in year two, Beane was asked about Coleman.
"Yeah, just like I was talking about Dalton a minute ago, he's in year one of that, of probably some more press, you know, he's going to see a lot more variety of coverages and defense and higher caliber corners, all those things are going to be new to him. And so he's going to learn on the way," Beane said.
"But the young man is super competitive. He loves ball. He's not afraid. He's working his tail off. His teammates believe in him. He has fun out there. He's serious – I know he's funny behind the mic and stuff like that, but when he's on the field, he's working his craft, and kind of what I said in the spring – there's still going to be some bumps along the road. He's a rookie playing receiver. It's a big jump, and so he'll have some good games, he'll have some plays he wants back, like all players, but especially rookies. But I'm very confident that when his number is called, you know, he'll step up and make the plays for us."
Bills fans would be wise to be patient with Coleman
It's fair to temper expectations for Coleman in his rookie season. Even though he was winning consistently on jump ball opportunities throughout training camp, Coleman is still a rookie that's making a major adjustment to the pro level. Learning how to battle NFL corners and create separation is a career-long learning process that Coleman is just getting into.
Remember – Coleman was one of the youngest players in this year's draft class, just turning 21 years old this spring. There's plenty of development time in his future.
Beane also mentioned that he hoped the offense was going to get more reps in the preseason, but due to injuries and other circumstances, it didn't happen. Seeing how Coleman's chemistry with quarterback Josh Allen develops on the field, and what role Coleman has in Joe Brady's offensive system, will be an important storyline to monitor throughout his rookie season.
