Bills’ Josh Allen breaks his silence on the firing of Sean McDermott with an emotional message for the former head coach
Josh Allen said what needed to be said about the firing of former head coach Sean McDermott.
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen caused quite a stir when he showed up to new head coach Joe Brady’s introductory press conference in crutches and a walking boot.
The quarterback needed surgery for a fifth-metatarsal avulsion, with a recovery time of only 8-10 weeks. Fortunately, he’ll be back in time for OTAs, and the Bills Mafia can breathe easy.
With former head coach Sean McDermott meaning so much to Allen, it was no surprise the reigning MVP opened up and broke his silence on the firing.

He had a special message for the former head coach, one that will resonate with the fan base, and it’s clear that Allen still has a lot of love in his heart for his former head coach. A touching tribute to a man who gave so much to the organization.
“I’m sitting in my house. I wake up to a call from Mr. Pegula, telling me what had transpired. I called Coach McDermott immediately. I have nothing but love and respect for Coach McDermott,” Allen began. “The last eight seasons, eight years of my life, he’s been through ups and downs of me as a player, as a person. He’s seen me grow up in a sense.”
He then went on to make a stunning admission, taking the blame on himself for the reason McDermott was fired. Allen didn’t shy away from the criticism after the loss to Denver.
Josh Allen takes accountability for the decision to let go of McDermott
“I had a part in (his firing),” Allen said. “If I make one more play in Denver, we’re not sitting here right now having this press conference. We’re probably getting ready to play another game.”
It’s a difficult pill to swallow for Allen, knowing that if he had done a little more in the game against Denver, the team might be having a totally different conversation right now.
“And that’s the hard part to take in from my perspective,” Allen said. “But that’s reality; it is what it is now. And I am very, again, very fortunate and thankful for Coach McDermott and everything he’s done and the trajectory that he set here for our players.”
That level of accountability is exactly why Allen remains the unequestioned leader of this franchise. As Buffalo turns the page under Joe Brady, Allen’s words serve as a reminder that the standard inside the building hasn’t changed. The past is honored, the responsibility is owned, and the focus now shifts to whatever comes next with Joe Brady as the team’s next head coach.
