The Buffalo Bills fell to the New England Patriots in what can only be classified as yet another embarrassing performance from the offense.
Coming into the season, it seemed like a general consensus that the offense would continue to shine with Josh Allen and the defense might take a step back with the question marks surrounding the middle linebacker position.
That couldn't be further from the truth to begin the NFL season. The defense, even with their injuries has been far exceeding expectations and has found an answer at linebacker with the emergence of Terrel Bernard.
However, the offense has been truly horrible after going on a hot streak to start the season. Just how bad is it? Mike Catalana, 13WHAM and Buffalo Plus YouTube Sports Director compiled the previous 3 games and how the Bills' offense has faired in the first half of those contests. Spoiler warning, they've been really bad.
In 16 drives over the first half of the past three games, Buffalo has only mustered one touchdown and one made field goal. This isn't the offense led by Jeff Tuel or Nathan Peterman, this is the Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs superstar duo with a first-round tight end in Dalton Kincaid and a stud WR2 in Gabe Davis on the field. Even more, Dawson Knox is getting paid as a top-ten tight end in the league and Buffalo went out and got some weapons in Deonte Harty and Trent Sherfield, but it hasn't amounted to success in the first half. Even with all those weapons and what looks to be an improved offensive line over last season, it hasn't translated into success over these past few games.
Going on X, formerly known as Twitter, you will see plenty of different hypotheses for what's going on in the offense. One suggestion is that Ken Dorsey is catering to the offense that Sean McDermott wants to be deployed, neutering Allen and his elite abilities and forcing the team to play a certain way.
The major issue is the team's inability to score points in the first half, forcing the team to have to mount a ridiculous comeback late in the contest. For some reason, it just seems like they can't get going and take far too long to find their rhythm on offense. You blink and they're down 10 points in situations that feel like they haven't even touched the football. Find a way, with all the talent on the roster, to score some points in the first half. We aren't even asking for them to be dominant, just score anything before the second half and that'll be an improvement over what's been happening over the past few weeks.
Regardless of whatever the issue is, it needs to be corrected and the team has a chance to do that rather quickly as they have a short week before playing against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football.
They need to score more points. Allen and this offense are far too good to only have one touchdown and one field goal in the first half of the past three contests.
As it currently sits, the team is leaving much to be desired on both sides of the football and needs to quickly find a solution before they find themselves getting buried under the weight of the other premiere teams in the AFC.
There's still time, but not a whole lot of it.
