Following the Buffalo Bills' trade of Boogie Basham, many assumed (myself included) it could mean that Von Miller would be ready to go to start the season. According to the latest news, however, that won't be the case.

Ian Rapoport from NFL Network reported on Tuesday that Miller is starting the year on the Reserve/PUP list, which means the star pass rusher will miss at least the first four games of the season.

It's a tough blow for the Bills but not an unexpected one. Taking the smart approach is also the correct way to go about things for somebody you're hoping will be around when it matters most. If Miller needs more time, there's no reason to rush the process and risk re-injury later.

Miller will miss games against the New York Jets, Las Vegas Raiders, Washington Commanders, and Miami Dolphins.

In the meantime, the Bills will be working with a group of edge rushers including Gregory Rousseau, Leonard Floyd, Shaq Lawson, and A.J. Epenesa. Last year, the team's pass rush left much to be desired once Miller went down. The defense wasn't able to generate pressure in the playoffs even against the Cincinnati Bengals' banged-up offensive line.

Finding ways to improve in that area will be key for Sean McDermott, who's taking on the role of the defensive coordinator following Leslie Frazier's departure earlier this year.

On Tuesday, the Bills traded DE Boogie Basham to the New York Giants for nothing more than a late-round swap in the 2025 NFL Draft, which shows confidence in what they've got.
