The Buffalo Bills finalized their initial 53-man roster, but that doesn’t mean the work is done. Less than 24 hours after the deadline passed, the team signed veteran safety Jordan Poyer. The former All-Pro and Bills fan-favorite comes back home to Buffalo in what could be his last season in the NFL.

Poyer was one of the players we mentioned in a previous article as a potential option for the team after some rocky play from the safeties throughout the preseason. “All-Pro Po” is back, and it’s like he never left.

Poyer’s career stats in Buffalo

In his 107 games across seven years in Buffalo, Poyer had 22 interceptions (one for a touchdown), 48 passes defended, eight forced fumbles, 11 sacks, 682 combined tackles, and 474 solo tackles. During his first season with the team in 2017, the Bills broke their 17-year playoff drought. The one-two punch of Poyer and Micah Hyde at safety was a nightmare for opposing offensive coordinators.

Poyer and Hyde were cornerstones of the defense, and the fan base never had to worry, outside of injuries, about what the team would do at the position — a stark contrast from today. That’s not throwing shade on Taylor Rapp or Cole Bishop, but Hyde and Poyer were All-Pro defenders. When the team was constructing its roster in years past, it was easy to throw up Hyde and Poyer and move on to the next position on the depth chart. Poyer joining this group will go a long way toward developing some of the younger players on the roster.

Recent performance

Now, we need to temper our expectations. Much like when Hyde joined the team in 2024, it was more of a mentorship role than actually being on the field. That’s not to say Poyer can’t or won’t be on the field, but it feels more like a locker room addition with Poyer finishing his career in a place he calls home. After one year in Miami, he’s back in Buffalo for what could be his curtain call. It has been reported that he will join the Bills’ practice squad. The announcement cannot be made official until noon ET.

During his lone season with the Dolphins, it was clear his age was catching up to him. Despite that, he appeared in 16 games for the team, totalling three passes defended, 98 combined tackles, and 51 solo tackles with one QB hit. A far cry from his All-Pro days in Buffalo, but we’re more than happy to have him back home.

Regardless, he’s back. Seeing him in a Dolphins jersey was just weird. Please don’t do that again.
