The Buffalo Bills will not see Odell Beckham Jr catching touchdowns from Josh Allen this season.
The superstar wide reciever, after months of waiting, finally made his decision and will be signing with the Baltimore Ravens.
Bills Mafia was clamoring for OBJ to Buffalo towards the end of last season and periodically this offseason. The thought of getting another weapon for Josh Allen was more than enticing and it seemed like the possibility was there. In fact, Brandon Beane had mentioned Odell Beckham Jr by name on multiple occasions and there were several reports indicating that Buffalo was tied to OBJ. With rose-colored glasses on, the move made sense.
However, once the price point was revealed for Beckham Jr's new deal with Baltimore, it was clear to see why Brandon Beane was out, and what a good thing that was. OBJ is going to be making upwards of $18M on a one-year deal with Baltimore. Put plainly, Buffalo should never have paid anywhere near that amount.
Brandon Beane wasn't willing to mortgage the team's future on a one-year deal with a wide receiver who hasn't touched a football field since the Super Bowl two years ago. At his peak, OBJ was an elite talent that could impact a game almost single-handily. There were just too many risks involved with the decision outside of the biggest one: money.
The Buffalo Bills' general manager will now look to the draft and pending free agents to fill out the rest of the roster. Just a few weeks ago, the talented general manager was in a poor cap situation, with the prospect of losing some top talent on the roster.
Beane, in a short amount of time, has been able to shore up a substantial amount of cap space, re-sign crucial players, and even surprise the Bills Mafia by bringing back Jordan Poyer. Beane not pulling the trigger and going all in for OBJ initially seems like yet another feather in the cap of the Bills' general manager. Obviously, hindsight is 20/20 but we doubt the team will look back at the end of the year and be upset they didn't spend nearly $20M on a one-year contract.
Buffalo is in their Super Bowl window and Brandon Beane very may well have extended that window with one decision: not signing OBJ.
Since his arrival, Brandon Beane has helped completely turn the franchise around. We're excited to see what other moves the talented general manager is able to pull off during his tenure in Buffalo.
