Bills offense could look a whole lot different after surprising right turn before preseason action begins
Things are heating up at One Bills Drive.
The Buffalo Bills and RB James Cook have yet to reach an agreement on a new contract. There’s a whole lot of rumors swirling, and Cook has been front and center in the national media with a holdout during training camp.
Despite his holdout and more than enough uncertainty, the Bills Mafia got quite the surprise ahead of their preseason matchup against the New York Giants. Cook, despite not being a participant at practice, was in full uniform and participated in 11-on-11 drills, as Joe Buscaglia from The Athletic reports.
Cook showed up for his teammates, and while it’s yet to be seen if he’ll touch the ball during the contest, it is a positive update after a few less-than-stellar developments surrounding the running back. The surprising right turn was a welcome one. While it’s yet to be seen how this impacts contract negotiations, fans were more than excited to see him back on the field.
Josh Allen opened up earlier this week on what his thoughts are on the current Cook situation, as did Brandon Beane and even Christian Benford.
All of them spoke in similar tones; they were disappointed but understood where Cook was coming from, and all they wanted was to have him back on the field.
Buffalo, coming off a season in which they fell short of expectations, could use the game-changer that Cook can be on the football field. If no deal between Cook and the Bills were to get done, we’d be left to wonder what a Cook-less offense looks like in Buffalo.
With the likes of Ray Davis, Frank Gore Jr, and Darrynton Evans still on the roster, the team has options but not a lot of time to firmly establish the RB1 on the roster.
Surely, the team would like a deal to get done sooner rather than later. With Kyren Williams recently inking a much-deserved new deal, it appears that Cook would be next in line for a payday if the two sides can come to an agreement.
While we don’t know the amount that’s being negotiated, it’s been reported that the two sides are close on a deal, which makes the whole contract drama that much more frustrating.
For now, Cook was participating with his team, which is more than a welcome sign. Josh Allen and James Cook are a dynamic duo on the football field and have had their fair share of exciting moments throughout the season.
Cook is an elite running back in the league, and having an elite running back on an offense led by an elite quarterback with an elite offensive line would make this offense look a whole lot different than it has over the past few days.
Even if Cook didn’t touch the ball once during the contest with the Giants, it was a positive update in a messy situation. Here’s hoping the team and Cook can find a way to end this before the regular season begins.
