The Buffalo Bills know they must make changes upfront. The offensive line was one of the team's most significant weaknesses last season even in spite of counting Mitch Morse and Dion Dawkins.
But on Tuesday, the Bills' front five lost assistant offensive line coach Ryan Wendell, who's getting hired by the Los Angeles Rams as OL coach. It's a promotion for the 36-year-old coach and he'll have his hands full trying to fix a disappointing position group in L.A.
The news, reported by ESPN's Dan Graziano, is a blow to the team as they lose someone who has rapidly risen through the coaching ranks. Just in 2019, he joined the Bills as a coaching assistant before being promoted in 2020 to assistant OL coach.
Ironically, Wendell will land with the Rams and take a job that current Bills OL coach Aaron Kromer once held. Not only was Kromer OL coach for the Rams from 2017 to 2020, but he also became the run game coordinator for L.A. in 2018 before heading back to the Bills in 2022 (Kromer didn't coach in 2021).
Wendell is going to a team that prioritizes outside and inside zone under Sean McVay. He could catapult his career by succeeding within one of the NFL's best coaching trees right now.
As for the Bills, OL must be a priority this offseason. Now they also need to hire an assistant OL coach but the difference will ultimately be made by the players on the field.
