A few weeks ago, it seemed like the playoffs were simply a dream when talking about the Buffalo Bills' 2023 season.
Now, the Bills are holding down the AFC's No. 6 seed heading into the Christmas holidays.
It's a turnaround that's now seen the Bills win three straight games. Two of those three games came against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys, with the latter consisting of a wire-to-wire blowout that displayed nothing but sheer domination by Buffalo. Meaning, these last three weeks haven't come via beating up on teams like the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, or New York Giants, or anything like that.
Per the New York Times' playoff machine, the Bills also have an 80% chance of making the playoffs, which is their highest odds of the year. It's even more wild to think Buffalo had just a 25% chance of making the dance five weeks ago.
The turnaround has been both remarkable and drastic and it has the Bills in the perfect spot heading into Christmas.
Bills have gone from almost dead in the water to serious contenders
Josh Allen said it best a few weeks ago when he said the Bills play their best when their backs are against the wall. Sure, little to zero margin for error isn't a spot any team wants to be in, but at least Buffalo knows how to handle business when they're in that situation.
Even with Saturday's slow start, the last three games have shown why a lot of people never gave up on Allen and co. during their slump. This roster has been torn apart by injuries, yet the team still looks elite when playing at its best because there is so much talent among the top-53 players.
Honestly, the Bills are right up there with the Baltimore Ravens when talking about the best teams in the AFC. And, there's still a chance the Ravens could drop multiple games over these last few weeks simply because of their very hard schedule.
Meaning, the Bills have a good chance of being looked at as a top-tier contender for the AFC crown once things kick off in mid-January.
It's important not to get too far ahead, right now, though. There's a lot of football left to be played even if it's the final three weeks of the season for the majority of the league. Based off how the current playoff picture is set up, the bulk of games still have a lot of meaning and just about every single one affects how the postseason shakes out in some manner.
Still, when discussing both the current state of the Bills and the NFL as a whole, it's a mistake to leave Buffalo out of the conversation when talking about the teams that can go all the way.
